Portable Generator Safety Tips

Filed under: Great Home Improvement Tips — admin @ 12:06 pm

Portable generators are great to have when the power goes out. But when using a generator, there are three dangers that you need to know about in order to avoid them. They are electric shock, Carbon Monoxide poisoning, and fire.

When using a generator there is a chance of getting electrocuted. Make sure to keep your generator dry and if it rainy or wet don’t use. Operate your generator on a dry surface under an open, roof-like unit. Don’t touch the generator unless your hands are dry.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning occurs when you inhale your generators toxic exhaust. Most important, is to never use a generator indoors. This includes: inside your home, garage, basement, crawl space or any partial or enclosed area which is connected to your living space. Using a fan, or opening windows and doors is not enough to prevent CO build-up.

Finally, preventing fires while using your portable generator can be done easily. Propane, gasoline, kerosene, and any other flammable liquids should be brought outside for storage. All containers should be properly labeled.

Don’t store fuel near any fuel burning appliance like a gas water heater. Invisible fumes can move along the ground if fuel is spilled. It can then be lit by the appliances pilot light. Lastly, turn your generator off and wait for it to cool down before refueling. Spilt fuel could ignite on a hot engine.

George Thomas helps you find the right portable generator for your needs. Choose from electric, diesel, gasoline, Coleman, and more.

Your Babysitter Must Have Been a Real Cockroach!

Filed under: Great Home Improvement Tips — admin @ 10:46 pm

It is interesting to study early childhood development years and the relationship to asthma. According to a study presented by the American Thoracic Society’s 99th International Conference in May 2003, exposure to certain types of irritants during the first year of life can actually increase the risk of developing asthma later in childhood. If the child is in a farming environment or exposed to cockroaches, pesticides, wood smoke or herbicides, these all increase the child’s possibility of getting asthma. The society came to the conclusion that certain environmental exposures early in life contribute to the development of asthma. If you have children, regardless of whether they have allergies or not, it is a good idea to have some type of air purifier in your home.

A study of more than 700 children showed that half of them had developed asthma by the age of five and the other half did not have asthma by that age. The information was provided by parents on the child’s early life and environmental exposures. Interestingly enough, it was found that was in the first year of life, a child was twice as likely to get asthma when exposed to cockroaches as opposed to those who weren’t. Also, exposure to herbicidal products in the first year of life was associated with a 4.6-fold increase in asthma, as opposed to those who were exposed to some type of pesticide that resulted in only a 2.4-fold increase.

Wood and oil smoke from heating and farming equipment also increased the risk of asthma, but the risk was strongest when the exposure occurred in the first year of a child’s life. If the exposure occurred when the child was older, it was found to not have as large an effect. During the first year of a child’s life, its lungs grow rapidly and as the immune system is developing, it becomes sensitized to asthma triggers. The use of an ionic air purifier is always a good idea.

Filed under: Great Home Improvement Tips — admin @ 11:23 am

Today you can have crystal chandelier lights and current design, too! Brilliant,Ornate,Beautiful and sparkling crystal chandeliers implicative of yore are surely still available, but the chandelier market is ripe with other styles. If you cannot surmise a chandelier is available that will fit your needs, shop around a bit. You are sure to dig up the perfect crystal chandelier for you and your home.

Chandeliers come in many new designs that include sleek metals with cylindrical crystal columns and free form shapes with colored crystals. Some even use black crystals that give a uncommon look, regardless of the overall design of the crystal chandelier. Other chandelier designs that have no crystal at all offer different lighting choices.

When investing in elegant crystal chandeliers for your home, consider room size, expected illumination, and design features. You want a chandelier that upgrades your room, but does not dominate it. You also may want to put a dimmer switch on your chandelier to control the light output. What looks dim during the day may seem extreme at night.

Be sure that your electrical box in the ceiling is rated to hold the extra power load and weight. All those little lights can pull a lot of juice and even relatively small crystal chandeliers can be loaded. If your ceiling and electrical box have never supported a ceiling fixture hanging from them, it is safe to assume that it is not reinforced. It is usually easy to retrofit your electrical box and improve the hold for your chandelier.

During light installation and particularly when hanging your crystal chandelier, you may also want to allow for ease of cleaning. Many larger chandeliers are equipped with a system that can bring down the chandelier for simpler cleaning. Since crystal only sparkles when it is clean, this can be a pretty important feature.

Another meaningful consideration when choosing hanging lamps of any kind is room or area size. Too large and you will dwarf the rest of your room. Too small and your hanging light might appear insignificant. Think proportionately when considering lighting options.

Also, balance your crystal chandelier lighting with the other furniture. If you have a heavy, dark dining room table, hanging a dark, ponderous chandelier will have the appearance of being downright Gothic. Instead, consider an open-design chandelier to compliment your dining table.

With today’s lighting selections, you should be able to upgrade your home. Crystal chandeliers are only the beginning. Many other hanging lamps are available. Pair hanging lights with recessed and accent lighting to add warmth to your decor.

Select Your Flooring Carefully

Filed under: Great Home Improvement Tips, Help + Advice — admin @ 3:37 pm

There are numerous factors which need to be taken into consideration when choosing what type of flooring to get fitted. Getting new flooring fitted in your home can breathe new life into it and can be a great way to improve your living environment. It may not be as expensive as you think either.

An important factor when choosing flooring is the function of the room it will go in. Flooring which is suitable for the front room may not be suitable for the kitchen or bathroom for example. Some of the most popular types of flooring are carpet, vinyl, wood, and laminate.

Laminate flooring can be a great alternative to wooden flooring if you are looking for a wood effect floor at a lower cost. Laminate flooring is made from a sheet of MDF with a wood-effect plastic surface glued to it. One pitfall of laminate flooring is that whilst it is scratch resistant once it is scratched it is not possible to repair. Apart from that it can still be a perfect choice for a kitchen, where the plastic coating provides an easy to wipe clean surface. On the other hand a solid wood flooring would not be appropriate in a bathroom, or in fact any room which is likely to get very humid and wet. Some woods are particularly sensitive to moisture such as beech.

If you are looking to fit a wooden floor, it’s important you have the right surface to fit it on. An ideal surface would be flat, and dry. There are options however to counter uneven flooring issues, such as laying ply throughout, or employing an underlay to create a ‘floating floor’.

Often laminate flooring is sold as a product you can fit together yourself which is another useful way of keeping costs to a minimum. Solid wood flooring requires a higher degree of DIY skills, so it can sometimes be advisable to get solid wooden floors fitted professionally which on the downside can add substantially to the cost.

One point to remember many people do not realise when they measure their room to calculate how much flooring they will need to buy - is that it is crucial to include a 10mm gap around the edge of the room for the wooden flooring to expand and contract.

As a fundamental part of any interior design strategy, it is important to select the correct flooring. Whilst wooden or laminate floors can be ideal - often for a more chic minimalist look; carpet can be a better option if you are trying to achieve a more traditional home feel. The important thing is you take into account the various factors you need to consider before ordering new flooring.
