Revolt of the Scholars

Filed under: Book Base — admin @ 10:49 pm

http://www.realsci.com/

Scindex’s Instant Publishing Service is about empowerment. The price of scholarly, peer-reviewed journals has skyrocketed in the last few years, often way out of the limited means of libraries, universities, individual scientists and scholars. A “scholarly divide” has opened between the haves (academic institutions with rich endowments and well-heeled corporations) and the haves not (all the others). Paradoxically, access to authoritative and authenticated knowledge has declined as the number of professional journals has proliferated. This is not to mention the long (and often crucial) delays in publishing research results and the shoddy work of many under-paid and over-worked peer reviewers.

The Internet was suppose to change all that. Originally, a computer network for the exchange of (restricted and open) research results among scientists and academics in participating institutions - it was supposed to provide instant publishing, instant access and instant gratification. It has delivered only partially. Preprints of academic papers are often placed online by their eager authors and subjected to peer scrutiny. But this haphazard publishing cottage industry did nothing to dethrone the print incumbents and their avaricious pricing.

The major missing element is, of course, respectability. But there are others. No agreed upon content or knowledge classification method has emerged. Some web sites (such as Suite101) use the Dewey decimal system. Others invented and implemented systems of their making. Additionally, one click publishing technology (such as Webseed’s or Blogger’s) came to be identified strictly to non-scholarly material: personal reminiscences, correspondence, articles and news.

Enter Scindex and its Academic Resource Channel. Established by academics and software experts from Bulgaria, it epitomizes the tearing down of geographical barriers heralded by the Internet. But it does much more than that. Scindex is a whole, self-contained, stand-alone, instant self-publishing and self-assembly system. Self-publishing systems do exist (for instance, Purdue University’s) - but they incorporate only certain components. Scindex covers the whole range.

Having (freely) registered as a member, a scientist or a scholar can publish their papers, essays, research results, articles and comments online. They have to submit an abstract and use Sciendex’s classification (”call”) numbers and science descriptors, arranged in a massive directory available in the “RealSci Locator”. The Locator can be also downloaded and used off-line and its is surprisingly user-friendly. The submission process itself is totally automated and very short.

The system includes a long series of thematic journals. These journals self-assemble, in accordance with the call numbers selected by the submitters. An article submitted with certain call numbers will automatically be included in the relevant journals.

The fly in the ointment is the absence of peer review. As the system moves from beta to commercialization, Scindex intends to address this issue by introducing a system of incentives and inducements. Reviewers will be granted “credit points” to be applied against the (paid) publication of their own papers, for instance.

Scindex is the model of things to come. Publishing becomes more and more automated and knowledge-orientated. Peer reviewed papers become more outlandishly expensive and irrelevant. Scientists and scholars are getting impatient and rebellious. The confluence of these three trends spells - at the least - the creation of a web based universe of parallel and alternative scholarly publishing.

Filed under: Help + Advice — admin @ 7:29 am

A lot of organisations these days do not spend a lot of time looking into their utility payments. Instead, they keep on paying whatever the electricity supplier bills them each period, without realising it they could very easily cut down their organisation’s energy payments significantly simply by controlling their power usage.

It’s really important to realise that modifications to your heating and ventilation systems can without doubt have a large effect on the level of energy used each week. Also, small amendments in your staffs’ daily habits can also help you to save a great deal more energy for your company than you think.

You will definitely be surprised to know that televisions, notebooks and microwave ovens use as much as 90% of the energy when put on standby. A further very important point to keep in mind is to turn off the lights each and every time you leave the office, as it’s one of the most straightforward and most effective methods to save electricity. Not on this, but energy saving light bulbs uses a significant amount less energy than conventional tungsten filament light bulbs. For this reason, by replacing your existing set of light bulbs would help to cut your business’s energy consumption considerably. Find superb business electric deals online today.

Radiators should also be switched off or at least be turned down when not in use as you can save a substantial amount of power by simply turning the heating on at a lower level. The same rule of lowering the temperature also is valid when heating water.

For efficient business energy management, the maintenance of your business building is tremendously important. The property should be correctly insulated and the machinery should be clean and well maintained in order that operating costs can be reduced. To get natural lighting, windows should not be blocked by wardrobes. Angled blinds should be installed so that sunlight can light up the premise on sunny days.

In addition, the government is trying to convince organisations to invest money in renewable electricity. Because of this, companies can claim tax relief by investing in energy saving equipment.

Blood Brothers’ is a show that is located in Liverpool during the 1960s. Numerous years later both boys meet each other and the story unravels. The play is a must see, although acquiring show-only tickets can be exceptionally expensive.

With this in mind, how can you find the best theatre deals currently around in order to enjoy ‘Blood Brothers’? Theatre packages are usually an offer that incorporates a night at a London hotel, tickets to a theatre show, and dinner. Obtaining the best theatre package requires extensive searching.

The Ever Anticipated Feat Of Walking

Filed under: Children + Parents — admin @ 12:46 pm

We make such a big deal out of when a baby takes his first steps. In fact, the age at which your child took his first steps will be ingrained in your Mommy memory forever, just like your child’s birth weight and time. Personally, I think walking is a bit overrated, since you can’t manage to keep them out of trouble ever again once they start, but here are some things you might want to know, anyway.

For some reason, everyone seems to think that a baby should be walking by his first birthday, but the fact is that most babies don’t walk until after this time. There are a few who walk as early as nine months of age, but a great many who don’t take their first steps until fifteen months. And, if your child is a late walker, it has absolutely no bearing on his intelligence.

The age at which a baby walks is often genetic. Walking very early or very late often runs in the family. My husband walked at nine months, and I walked at ten months, so we were unlucky enough to have a daughter who also walked at ten months. She was very petite, so she looked like the world’s tiniest walking human. She also scaled the kitchen counters before she was a year old, so you can see what I mean by “unlucky”.

When your baby walks is also often related to his size. Babies with short legs usually walk sooner than those with long legs (a balance issue) and thinner babies usually walk sooner than their more plump counterparts.

Pushing your baby to walk is not a good idea, but providing him the opportunity to learn is critical. If you force your child to endure daily practice sessions, he may just rebel and refuse to walk for quite a while. On the other hand, if you keep him in swing or playpen all day, he’ll never have the opportunity to try out his skills. Give him some supervised time on the floor, and he’ll figure the rest out with or without your help.

If, by chance, your child is not walking by the age of eighteen months, it is best to have him checked out by a doctor. There is not necessarily anything wrong, but most babies are walking by this age, so have him examined as a precaution. But, don’t be too eager, because once he starts walking, all the rules change. Someone, though I don’t remember who, once said, - “We spend the first two years of our children’s lives teaching them to walk and talk, and then the next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut up.” It’s so true.

A Crucial Guide To Purchasing Electric Cookers

Filed under: Technology Hall — admin @ 3:39 am

Obtaining a gas powered cooker or electrical cooker can often be an intimidating idea, mainly because the price tags normally start from a low of around three hundred pounds anywhere up to the higher end items which can cost you considerably more than two-thousand pounds. The many choices available within this wide price range are enormous & quite often extremely hard to differentiate.

Nevertheless, immediately after you’ve removed gas operated cookers as a choice there are various core points to investigate that should assist you in narrowing your choices from thousands of types of electric cookers to four or maybe even five cookers.

Crucial Qualities to Consider: Straight away, your main consideration should realistically be if you find it necessary to purchase a stand alone or built-in cooker. A fit-in cooker doesn’t demand housing: in addition a model that comes with a singular oven generally fits inside a sixty cm cubic space (sixty centimetres high, by sixty centimetres wide, by sixty centimetres deep). One other option is to select a double oven which can go into a space of similar width and depth as a singular oven, but can sometimes be 90 centimetres in height.

If you are building the electric powered cooker into a new or restored kitchen, side-by-side ovens are a favourite option.

This means that you must decide among electric cookers that have either single or dual ovens. With two ovens you can cook two pieces of food at completely different levels of heat; then again you can use one as a broiler or warmer. Discover a huge collection of electrical products such as; electric cookers, electric fireplaces and deco fires from leading brands online.

Other basic points to weigh up comprise of whether you would prefer electronic or manual controls, a self-cleaning oven (a customary feature) or, even better, an electric oven with a pyrolytic cleaning component. Such units which clean the complete interior are found in the more dear brands.

In addition, you will also need to think about your new cooker’s exhaust system, whether it will be built-in or “chimney” style.

Electric Cooker Setup: A trained salesman should be able to aid you through the options described above, & also support you in determining if your electricity supply is not too much for the precise type of electric powered cooker you are buying. Most electric cookers need a 30 or forty five amp power supply, with a thirteen amp fuse connection. Electric powered cookers don’t normally come with cables integrated; even so, it is strongly suggested that you find a knowledgeable engineer for the setup. The engineer will then make sure that you have the appropriate electric supply & connection.

Gas cookers and electrical cookers both posses their own benefits, and among cookers electric powered makes are on average the most appropriate choice to get.

Microsoft Great Plains - Typical Problems And Fixes - Overview For IT Administrators

Filed under: Internet Software Resources — admin @ 6:30 pm

How to delete the user? This is the first problem you encounter - when user shuts down the computer - Great Plains doesn’t have the command to log off the user and when user tries to login the next day - she gets error message that user is already logged on. The fix:

  • Microsoft SQL Server - open SQL Query Analyzer, switch to DYNAMICS database and run the following script: DELETE ACTIVITY WHERE USERID=’KATHY’.
  • Pervasive SQL/Ctree - if you have more than one user registered you can delete the user from GP: System->User Activity->Delete User. If you like to work on the file level - ask all the users to log off. On the server, where you have your Great Plains files structure - DYNAMICS is the root, in SYSTEM folder delete ACTIVITY.* files

How to unlock the batch? This happens when user posts the batch and has her computer crashed (via surfing the internet - smile - or things like this)

  • General tip - Great Plains recommends to logoff and then login back with the same user id. Then Great Plains will prompt the user to recover posting batch. Unfortunately it doesn’t work in 70% of the cases
  • MS SQL Server - the batch record is stored in Batch Header table: SY00500 in the company database. The fields to clear are: BCHSTTUS and MKDTOPST. In some cases you have to delete the record from SY00800 from DYNAMICS db.
  • Pervasive/ctree - you have to install ODBC driver for Pervasive or Ctree and hook the tables: SY00500, SY00800 with Microsoft Access - use linked tables technique

Now we would like to stress you the need to move away from Pervasive SQL 2000/Ctree platforms - you are in trouble - Microsoft Business Solutions cuts technical support for Microsoft Great Plains 7.5 and prior on these platforms. This means not only the support, but also tax updates (especially Payroll and Federal Magnetic Media).

What is migration from Ctree/Pervasive.SQL 2000 to MS SQL/MSDE? MBS has migration tool. You need first to install Great Plains on SQL Server with exactly the same account/segments structure and then install migration tool (it is Dexterity chunk) on your ctree/Pervasive workstation - then, when you integrate the chunk - you will map it to target SQL-based Great Plains Company, select all system and company tables, click the button and it will move all your tables one-by-one. In the case when your Great Plains ctree/Pervasive has third parties - you need to check if the vendor has migration tool - otherwise you have to do manual move, use SQL Linked server to your legacy data

Do I need consultant? It is probably good idea to have consultant to do the upgrade. We strongly recommend you to use consultant in the following cases

  • You have Dexterity customization
  • You are doing migration from Pervasive/Ctree to Microsoft SQL Server/MSDE, especially when you have third-parties without migration tools
  • You have a lot or ReportWriter Modified Great Plains Reports
  • You have old version of Great Plains: Dynamics or eEnteroprise 6.0 or prior - in this case you can not appeal to Microsoft Technical Support - it is discontinued
  • Your Great Plains has more than 20 users and you have to have upgrade done over the weekend - if it fails - you have business problems
  • You don’t have support - in this case you have to select your Microsoft Business Solutions Partner and pay for the annual support/enhancement plan - you will get new registration key and will be ready for the upgrade

Good luck in fixing and if you have issues or concerns - we are here to help! If you want us to do the job - give us a call 1-866-528-0577! help@albaspectrum.com

The Secret To Real eBay Success

Filed under: Auctioneering — admin @ 3:23 pm

Q. I hear so much about people who started selling on eBay and eventually turned it into their full time business. Is it really possible to build a profitable business just selling junk on eBay? — Alex K.

ANSWER:

If Fred Sanford were alive today, Alex, I’m sure he’d be earning his ripple money by selling quality junk on eBay. While it’s also true that one man’s junk is another man’s treasure (I have a garage full of treasure to prove this point), your chances of building a profitable business selling “junk” on eBay (or anywhere else, for that matter) are slim to none.
While there is a lot of junk/treasure for sale on eBay, it is typically sold by individuals who have “I break for yardsales!” bumper stickers on their cars and not serious business people.

For serious entrepreneurs, however, selling on eBay can be a good way to start a new business if you are willing to put in the time and energy required to make the business a success. eBay is also a good option for existing businesses to expand their reach by selling online.
Everyone from small used car dealers to giant companies like Dell Computers have discovered that eBay is an excellent place to hawk their wares simply due to the huge number of folks who visit the eBay site on a daily basis. Nowhere else on earth will you find such a large pool of potential customers.

Consider these numbers:

There are nearly 69 million eBay users who spend $59 million every day.

Most eBay sellers are home-based businesses that sell everything from porcelain dolls to locks of Elvis’ hair to $100,000 Mercedes convertibles to $5 million dollar vacation homes.

Every minute of every day more than 150 new items are listed for sale, more than 500 bids are placed, and seven new people register to shop on eBay.

At any given moment, eBay is conducting some 12 million auctions, divided into about 18,000 different categories

About two million new items are offered for sale every day, and 62 million registered users scour the site to find them.

One company is grossing more than $5 million dollars a year selling brand new pool tables on eBay. Their eBay store is so profitable that they have closed their retail location and now sell solely online.
That’s right, $5 million dollars from the sale of pool tables: proof that you can sell just about anything on eBay if you know how to do it.

Be aware, however, that eBay is no magic bullet. As any eBay Power Seller (a seller who sells a minimum of $10,000 in goods per month) will tell you, building a profitable eBay business takes hard work and requires long hours, and often the financial rewards do not make it worth the effort spent.

When it comes down to the mechanics of it all, running an eBay business is no different than running a brick and mortar business. You still have the same considerations regarding product selection, inventory purchasing, product pricing, inventory management, order processing, fulfillment, customer service, etc.

You must also consider the legal and accounting aspects of the business. Just because you’re selling online does not mean that Uncle Sam won’t expect his piece of the pie. Revenue generated by an eBay business is just as reportable and taxable as revenue generated from a brick and mortar store. And if you sell to customers within your state you may also be responsible for collecting city, county or state sales tax.

One of the biggest obstacles to building a successful eBay business may be the stiffness of the competition. Many sellers sell identical items and the price wars often get ugly, but that’s to be expected in a free market place, which is exactly what eBay is.

You may be the only store in town that’s selling that one of a kind, custom made just for you, broke the mold after they made it, Dale Earnhart Memorial Bobble Head Action Figure (Earnhart fans would string me up if I called it a Doll), but do a quick search on eBay and you’ll probably find a hundred others just like it.

So, can you build a profitable business selling on eBay? Certainly, thousands of people have done it and so can you. Here are a few tips to help get you started.

Sell Quality Products

Don’t sell junk! Leave the knick-knacks and fake leather jackets to the less informed. You should offer only quality products at a fair price.

Research The Competition

Once you have your product in mind, don’t invest a dime on inventory until you have spent some time on eBay to see what the competition is doing. If you want to sell motorcycle helmets, for example, you should look at current auctions to see how many others are selling similar helmets and what prices they are charging. This step is vital since you may discover that you can’t compete with current sellers on price or there is simply no market for what you have to offer.

Start Slowly

Many people believe that the more items they have for sale on eBay the better. They will invest thousands in inventory and spent hundreds on listing fees (yes, eBay charges you to list items for sale and collects a final fee if the item sells). Those are the folks that usually end up with ten thousand Ginsu knives forever in their garage.

Test, Test, Test

A fair portion of eBay auctions result in no sales, so it’s best to test the waters before jumping in with both feet.
List a few items and see how they sell. If an item doesn’t sell, list it at least twice more. Some items might not sell the first time, but may the second or third, then sell steadily from then on. If an item gets no bids the first time, consider adjusting your price or your terms. If an item sells well, keep it in stock and then experiment with another item.

Do Your Homework

eBay is too broad a subject to be covered fully here, but there are a multitude of books available that can help you start an eBay business.
In fact, I bet you’ll find most of them for sale at this very moment at eBay.

What’s my bid…

7 Reasons To Start Up With an Exercise Program

Filed under: Virtual Shopping Malls — admin @ 6:10 am

Most of us need to follow an exercise program. This is due to the fact that just a minority of Americans exercise in a significant way. Below follows 7 good reasons to start exercising now.

1. Contributes to fat loss.

It is well documented from scientific research all over the world for many years that physical exercise contributes significantly to weight loss. I will not dwell on this issue fore it is so obvious, but just mention the simple fact that weight loss is a function of the net calorie intake.

If you burn more calories than you take in thorough nutrition, you lose weight and vice versa. When you exercise you burn more calories then when you don’t. So the buttom line is: All other factors equal, the more you exercise the more weight or fat you’ll lose. That’s really simple.

2. Preventing Disease

The probability of developing a large number of various diseases has been proven to decrease dramatically thanks to physical exercising. These include;

heart disease

cancer

diabetes

stroke

About 4/5’s of deaths caused by heart disease and cancer, are linked to life-style factors like stress and lack of physichal training. We also know that diabetes increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. This shows that many of the risk factors and diseases caused by inactivity are working together to damage your health. Don’t let these ugly forces do that - start exercising today.
